We have stated that Jesus is Creator God. “God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him.” John 1:3
Jesus demonstrated his power over creation by reenacting four key areas found in creation.
First, Jesus created something out of nothing/or rearranged matter to make it different. In Genesis 1 we start with nothing, then we see Jesus change matter into light and darkness, followed by sky, land and sea, etc. In John 2:1-11 we observe Jesus changing water into wine. Again, he rearranged molecules into something new, demonstrating his power over matter.
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water”; so they filled them to the brim.
8 Then he told them, “Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.”
They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.
Second, creation involved giving life to otherwise lifeless matter. Jesus again demonstrated his power of life. There are three instances of Jesus giving life to the dead: a window’s son (Luke 7:11-17); Jairus’s daughter (Mark 5:21-43, Matthew 9:18-26, Luke 8:40-56); and his dear friend Lazarus (John 11:38-44.) While the first two were very recently dead, Lazarus had been dead for days and the observers commented that by now he would stink. Not even the stink stopped Jesus from giving life.
Third, God spoke or willed into existence creation. Jesus used a variety of methods to work miracles. He would touch the sick, used saliva on a blind man, and spoke to the diseased, dead and demon possessed. But notice it was his “will” that created the miracle. When the Jesus heals the nobleman’s son in John 4:46-54 they were in Cana. The nobleman lived in Capernaum about 17 miles away. No one could hear Jesus say the words. No one could see Jesus or be touched by him. Essentially Jesus willed the boy to be better and it happened. The same is true with the centurion’s servant who was healed even though he was more than a day’s journey away. (Luke 7:1-10)
Fourthly, God created the heavens and earth to display his glory. John records multiple times that Jesus did miracles to reveal his glory. John 2:11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
It is exciting to realize this same Jesus who was at creation was still working with the same power during his earthly ministry. That encourages us to know Jesus has the same power today to deal with our situations and challenges. He is not done creating!
Prayer: Jesus, we know you are the same, yesterday, today and forever. You have demonstrated your power over creation in the past and assure us you have control over our future. You are lord over creation and lord over our life. We look to you for every answer.
Questions to think about:
- Can you think of other ways Jesus demonstrated he was still the same from creation to his earthly ministry?
- How does God display his glory through creation in your life?
- How does the knowledge of seeing Jesus use the same creation power encourage you to trust Jesus for your situation? What do you need to trust him to create for you?

God’s glory is evident all around us every day. We can see it through all the intricate design of nature. The life cycle of each thing. How one think passes and produces enrichment for all the following members and those around them. From the smallest creature to the biggest, we can watch the marvel.
